The new school year is right around the corner and while this can be stressful, your child can have a healthier school year with the right plan in place.

Some back-to-school tasks like buying school supplies and planning for a new schedule are easy to remember every year, but scheduling your child’s doctor’s appointment is often overlooked. Your child’s health and wellbeing should always be top priority.

Here are some ways you can give your child a healthy head start this school year:

Start routines now

Going back to school can cause anxiety for some children. Easing them into the new routine can reduce fear, since your child knows what to expect. Talking about the new schedule or practicing new bedtime/morning routines can prepare your child accordingly. Familiarizing your child with their new surroundings by visiting the school playground or practicing walking to the bus can help the first day go smoothly.

Make a game plan

You can’t forget about the necessities. Making sure you’re well prepared will help you and your child stay stress-free. Check the school’s schedule and make a note of any important dates or meetings. Do any back-to-school or grocery shopping in advance. If your child is interested in sports, research and register before it’s too late.

Annual wellness visits

Whether it’s required by your school or not, getting an annual physical for your child can set them up for success for the new school year. Children develop very quickly, both mentally and physically. Yearly checkups allow your physician to note any changes in your child’s health and behavior or even developmental delays. This is a great time to talk to your physician about healthy habits and update or renew any prescriptions.
