What volunteer opportunities are available?

What are the requirements for becoming a volunteer?
Adult Volunteers: 18+ years of age, TB Clearance (new volunteers must undergo a two-step process), flu vaccination, and background check.
Jr. Volunteers: ages 16-18, high school student, GPA 3.0, letter of recommendation, parental consent.
All volunteers must be able to commit to a weekly volunteer schedule (shifts are 3 hours maximum), a minimum of 60 hours per calendar year (you can always volunteer more hours), and a year (12 months) of service.
Where can I fill out an application?
Once you have reviewed the current volunteer opportunities and identified a service that best fits your availability, please email Volunteering@samc.com for additional information.
Can I volunteer in a clinical setting?
The program does not allow for any volunteers to work in a clinical setting. All volunteers must sign an acknowledgment called "No Hands-on Care."
Can I gain employment after volunteering?
The program is not designed as a pathway to employment. The purpose is to cultivate a connection between our community members who have a passion to serve others and share their time to provide comfort during a very stressful time.
Can I volunteer to fulfill court ordered community service?
No. The program focuses on cultivating long-term volunteers who want to serve their community and give of their time to and help provide comfort in a highly stressful situation.
What physical activities must a volunteer be able to perform?
All volunteers must be able to sit and/or stand for the duration of their shift (3 hours). They must be able to push a wheelchair, open and hold doors for patients and visitors. They must be able to walk up flights of stairs if needed. They must be able to bend down and/or extend their arms if asked to wipe down seats in waiting areas.
Can I job shadow a physician?
The program does not offer any job shadowing opportunities. Students are welcomed to contact Laurene Cox, Director Clinical Development & Professional Practice, Laurene.Cox@samc.com for questions.
