Residency Wellness

While residency is challenging with its rigor and pace, at Saint Agnes Medical Center we strive to support healthy work life balance with training in fatigue mitigation, healthy eating, healthy lifestyle, self-care practices, and managing emotional and mental health. The residency program hosts social activities lead by the Wellness Committee and its Social Subcommittee, under the direction of the Director of Wellness, Dr. Brad Lyons. Biannual (Resident Only) forums are held so that leadership is in touch with resident concerns.

The Graduate Medical Education Program at Saint Agnes Medical Center is deeply committed to optimal resident and faculty member well-being.  The our wellness policy (Policy 024) is designed to provide assistance for residents, faculty and GME colleagues who might experience burnout, depression, substance abuse or areas of concern relating to the stressors of academics (including but not limited to substance abuse, psychiatric evaluation, personal and professional matters). The GME programs, in partnership with Saint Agnes, Human Resources and the Medical Staff Office, provides access to confidential, affordable mental health assessment, counseling, and treatment, including access to urgent and emergent care 24 hours a day, seven days a week, this includes Carebridge EAP, Employee Health and Saint Agnes Urgent Care locations.

For instructions on downloading the Carebridge EAP app, which provides mindfulness podcasts, child care and elder care locators, educational webinars, life management resources and a member support website (www.mylifesource.com), click here

What our residents say

The word "Colleague" says it all, coming from the early 16th century French word collègue and the Latin collega from col- ‘together with’ + legare ‘depute’.  At Saint Agnes Medical Center you are not an employee.  You are a colleague who is also teammate, associate, collaborator, ally, and companion.  In this you wellbeing and the wellbeing of all our colleagues matter.  You matter!

  • Phison "Sonny" Pham, MD Internal Medicine, PGY3
"I enjoy the people I work with, in particular the attendings and residents.  It's apparent that the attendings are caring and eager to teach, open to adjustments that can produce a more effective and productive educational environment.  The fellow residents in both programs have been friendly and positive.  We all encourage, teach, and learn from each other.  Having such strong relationships helps to alleviate the rigors and stress of residency."

  • Kevin Orita, MD, Internal Medicine, PGY3
Off the Saint Agnes Campus, the Fresno/Clovis area has a number of great activities and venues to suit every need, taste and talent.  "Whether its folks wearing their Bulldog apparel on game day to dancing in the streets to live music during the Friday night farmer's market in Old Town Clovis, one truly feels like they're part of something bigger here in the Valley. All of this can be experienced without sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic that I was so accustomed to in the OC."

  • Zhoobin Bateni, MD, Family Medicine PGY3
With weather that allows for activities nearly 365 days a year, the Sierra an hour away and beaches less than three hours' drive, everything is a tank of gas away! "I love hiking, fishing and exploring the nature! Central Valley, Fresno, Clovis, and the beautiful Sierra Nevada Mountains are a real paradise for the nature lovers, backpackers, hikers, and campers!"
