Saint Agnes Medical Center is a busy tertiary care hospital with over 20,000 discharges annually, offering enriching educational experiences for residents. Saint Agnes, part of the large national health system Trinity Health, is located in the heart of the central San Joaquin Valley in California. In a defined Healthcare Provider Shortage Area (HPSA), Saint Agnes is a longstanding community benefit organization serving an extremely diverse community with a heavy disease burden as defined in the community health needs assessment. Given Saint Agnes' core values and long-standing tradition of compassionate care, building an accredited physician residency program was a logical and much needed goal to grow medical care in a vastly underserved region.

Saint Agnes Medical Center was approved as a sponsoring institution in 2016 and received accreditation for a residency program in Internal Medicine in 2017. With the approval for our new Family Medicine residency program effective July 1, 2018, plans are also underway for the development of a Emergency Medicine and a Transitional Year. We have a minimum of 16 Internal Medicine residents, and eight Family Medicine residents per year over three years.

To support our residents, service lines include heart and vascular services, with interventional cardiology, cardiothoracic and vascular surgery, cancer services, a full service line of general and specialty inpatient and outpatient surgeries, obstetrics and maternal fetal medicine, neonatal intensive care services on-site, a certified stroke program, oncology services, interventional radiology, and a high volume emergency department. Medicine services, supported by a large hospital medicine group (Hospitalists) include capabilities for gastroenterology, neurology, endocrinology, urology, nephrology, palliative care and other medical specialties.

To increase the resident's exposure to a wide array of clinical experiences, Saint Agnes Medical Center has relationships with associated hospitals, including Valley Children's Healthcare and Memorial Medical Center (Dignity Health) for elective and selective rotations as needed. Additionally, Saint Agnes Medical Foundation is a multispecialty physician group practice affiliated with Saint Agnes Medical Center - Saint Agnes Care - which will provide additional educational experiences for residents in its primary care, specialty care, urgent care and occupational health clinics operated in multiple locations across the service area. Saint Agnes Medical Center achieves meaningful use with Cerner as the certified electronic medical record (EMR) for the inpatient setting, and Athena as the certified EMR in outpatient affiliated physician practices.
