Vision

Through its unrelenting pursuit of excellence, the vision of Saint Agnes Medical Center's Graduate Medical Education and Physician Residency programs is to educate, graduate and academically sustain Central California's health care leaders as outstanding, compassionate clinicians, researchers, educators and health policy makers.

Goals

The American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) defines the goal of medical education “to produce physicians who can meet the changing needs of society and of the health care environment." Saint Agnes Medical Center's Graduate Medical Education (GME) program curriculum is robust and meets the requirements of the ACGME and the relevant American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) specialty boards. The GME curriculum is fully articulated in the specialty program goals and objectives and is designed to meet the unique health care needs of our region. Additionally, our residents and faculty have access to a national student body and faculty resources available through Trinity Health's gme University and its sister teaching hospitals.

Educational Philosophy

The educational philosophy of the Saint Agnes Medical Center's Graduate Medical Education and Physician Residency programs is to train each medical student to:

  • Be inquisitive, lifelong learners.
  • Cultivate a health care community that upholds our values of reverence, commitment to the poor and underserved justice, stewardship and integrity.
  • Be a compassionate, knowledgeable, and skilled physician/scientist, with a thirst for excellence and a heart for servant leadership in healthcare.
  • Practice, teach, and/or undertake research with the highest professional and ethical standards to meet the health care needs of the people of Central California, Trinity Health's population health agenda (episodic care, condition management, health and well-being of communities, and to be the trusted healthcare partner for life.
  • Be an independent, self-directed learner. These skills will be fostered through the use of progressive, innovative, patient-centered, problem-based, active, integrated methods of instruction that promote independent, self-directed learning whenever possible, and utilizing appropriate methods of competency-based development outcomes and assessments that can be demonstrated progressively by residents, the ACGME Milestones.

The points outlined in this Educational Philosophy serve as a guide for making institutional decisions related to curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation. They represent the spirit and vision of maintaining Saint Agnes Medical Center's Graduate Medical Education and Physician Residency programs, as a leader in graduate medical education.
