Hospice Volunteering
Volunteers are the heart of Saint Agnes Hospice. We depend on our volunteers to help us provide the extra love and care our patients and their families need at this time in their life.
Volunteers primarily offer support to caregivers to allow them some free time and relief from their daily responsibilities and stress. Volunteers also provide practical assistance and companionship to patients facing a life-limiting illness.
What do volunteers do?
- Support for patient – This can include visiting, reading, writing letters, playing games or music, running errands, wheelchair walks, sharing a laugh, treasuring a memory, holding a hand, or spending quiet time at a patient's bedside – just being there so a patient never feels alone.
- Support for family members – Volunteers can allow family caregivers the opportunity to take care of necessary errands, assist with light household tasks or light meal preparation. Family members also appreciate a visit from a compassionate friend who understands what they are going through.
- Administrative work – Volunteers perform the administrative tasks necessary to support the hospice office operations. These tasks may include: filing, copying, mailings, making phone calls as well as working on special projects.
- Sunshine volunteers – Sunshine volunteers support our patients and families through the making of creative craft projects for holidays and special occasions. They also cut, sew and stuff pillows for each patient.
Saint Agnes Hospice thoroughly trains volunteers so they are fully equipped for the challenge of end of life care and are aware of the specific ways hospice serves the community.
In order to volunteer for Saint Agnes hospice, you need a genuine spirit of care and compassion, a few free hours (1-4) a week, and a desire to do something nice for someone who will really appreciate you. We do ask our volunteers to commit to providing a minimum of one year of service. Applicants must not have experienced a personal loss within the last 12 months.
